Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Alaris 8110 Syringe Module?

The Alaris® Medley 8110 Syringe Module is a smart syringe infusion module designed to work exclusively with the BD/CareFusion Alaris Medley System. When connected to an Alaris 8000 or 8015 Point-of-Care Unit (PCU), it provides highly accurate syringe-based delivery of medications, blood products, and intravenous fluids for adult, pediatric, and neonatal patients. It is commonly used in ICUs, operating rooms, NICUs, emergency departments, and other critical care settings.

Does the Alaris 8110 operate by itself?

No. The Alaris 8110 Syringe Module cannot operate as a standalone syringe pump. It must be connected to an Alaris 8000 or 8015 Point-of-Care Unit (PCU), which supplies power, programming, the user interface, and communication with other Alaris modules.

What types of medications can the Alaris 8110 deliver?

The Alaris 8110 is designed to administer medications, blood products, and IV fluids that require precise syringe-based delivery. It is commonly used for vasoactive medications, sedatives, analgesics, insulin, chemotherapy agents, neonatal medications, pediatric infusions, and anesthesia drugs where highly accurate low-volume infusion is essential.

What syringe sizes are compatible with the Alaris 8110?

The Alaris 8110 automatically recognizes approved disposable Luer-lock syringes ranging from 1 mL to 60 mL. It supports multiple syringe manufacturers, allowing healthcare facilities flexibility while maintaining infusion accuracy.

What infusion rates does the Alaris 8110 support?

The module delivers infusion rates from 0.01 mL/hr to 999 mL/hr with an instrument accuracy of approximately ±2%, depending on the syringe and administration set being used. This wide range makes it suitable for neonatal, pediatric, and adult applications.

What is Guardrails® Suite MX?

Guardrails® Suite MX is BD's Dose Error Reduction Software (DERS). It uses facility-specific drug libraries containing medication names, concentrations, dosing limits, and clinical advisories to help reduce medication programming errors. The software includes both soft limits, which generate warnings, and hard limits, which cannot be overridden.

Does the Alaris 8110 include a drug library?

Yes. When connected to an Alaris PCU with Guardrails® enabled, the Alaris 8110 utilizes the facility's customized drug library to provide standardized medication programming and dose checking.

Do refurbished Alaris 8110 modules come with a drug library?

Typically, no. Drug libraries are created and maintained by each healthcare facility and are customized to its medications, concentrations, care areas, and clinical protocols. During refurbishment, previous facility drug libraries are generally removed. The purchasing facility is responsible for loading and validating its own approved drug library before clinical use.

Can the Alaris 8110 be used without a drug library?

Yes. The module can be operated using standard infusion programming without Guardrails® enabled. However, advanced medication safety features such as dose checking, standardized medication selection, and drug-specific limits will not be available.

Can Outfront Medical install my hospital's drug library?

In most cases, no. Drug library management is typically performed by each healthcare facility's pharmacy, biomedical engineering, nursing leadership, and clinical informatics teams. Software compatibility should be verified before integrating refurbished modules into an existing Alaris fleet.

What safety features are included?

The Alaris 8110 includes Guardrails® medication safety software, automatic syringe recognition, pressure sensing technology, syringe misload detection, adjustable occlusion pressure settings, configurable alarms, KVO (Keep Vein Open), Fast Start technology, and automatic pressure monitoring to improve medication safety and infusion accuracy.

What is pressure sensing technology?

The Alaris 8110 uses an integrated pressure sensing disc that continuously monitors in-line pressure. This allows earlier occlusion detection, faster alarm response, reduced startup delays, and helps minimize post-occlusion bolus delivery.

What administration routes are supported?

The Alaris 8110 may be used for clinically accepted routes of administration including intravenous (IV), intra-arterial (IA), epidural, subcutaneous, enteral, and irrigation therapies when used according to hospital protocols and manufacturer recommendations.

Is this Alaris 8110 Syringe Module new or refurbished?

This Alaris Medley 8110 Syringe Module has been professionally refurbished, tested, calibrated, and verified for proper operation prior to shipment by Outfront Medical.

What warranty is included?

This refurbished Alaris Medley 8110 Syringe Module includes a 1-year warranty from Outfront Medical.

Why choose the Alaris 8110 Syringe Module?

The Alaris 8110 remains one of the most widely used hospital syringe infusion modules because of its exceptional accuracy, seamless integration with the Alaris Medley System, Guardrails® medication safety software, automatic syringe recognition, advanced pressure monitoring, and proven reliability in critical care, anesthesia, neonatal, and pediatric applications.
